Joseph Akpan

IBET Momentum Fellow at University of Calgary

Joseph Akpan is an Eyes High Doctoral Scholar in Sustainable Systems Engineering at the University of Calgary, where he conducts transdisciplinary research on equitable electric vehicle charging infrastructure. His research sits at the intersection of engineering, sustainability, and equity, exploring how systems thinking and optimization can help create cleaner, more accessible, and inclusive mobility systems.

Joseph holds a B.Eng. Mechanical Engineering from the University of Uyo, Nigeria, and a M.Eng. Industrial Engineering from Durban University of Technology, South Africa. He also gained international research experience through research stays at the University of Valladolid, Spain, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong.

Between his undergraduate and graduate studies, Joseph spent five years working across the manufacturing, energy, and consulting sectors. This blend of research and industry experience has shaped his interest in connecting engineering innovation with real-world societal needs.
Outside research, he enjoys mentoring, travelling, and volunteering with students, youth and teen-focused activities.
