Matthew Sasakamoose

IBET Momentum Fellow at University of Alberta

Matthew was born and raised in Edmonton and is a proud member of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation. He is Dene through his mother, Eileen Sasakamoose, from Yellowknives Dene First Nation, and Cree through his father, Leo Sasakamoose, from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation.

He is currently pursuing a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta, with a research focus on electrostrictive row-column ultrasound arrays. Matthew completed his undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta in 2024. Shortly afterward, he began a Master’s in Electrical and Computer Engineering, before transferring to the PhD program after his first year.

In his free time, Matthew enjoys watching hockey, spending time with his girlfriend, Faustina, and being outdoors. He also frequently visits family across western Canada and the Northwest Territories. From a young age, he was drawn to technology. When he wasn’t on the ice or the football field, he was often experimenting with computers and designing video games. That early curiosity grew into a passion for engineering, which continues to drive his research today.
