The University of Waterloo welcomed Biniyam Deressa, Debela Tadele, and Stephen Robinson-Enebeli into the Faculty of Engineering this fall as their three inaugural doctoral candidates receiving the Indigenous and Black Engineering and Technology (IBET) Fellowship. This fellowship provides $30,000/year of financial support for four years for those who are selected and allows fellows to connect with experienced mentors working in both academic and industrial settings. The IBET initiative was established to increase diversity in these settings by providing tailored support to Indigenous and Black PhD students, as these groups are significantly underrepresented in academia and STEM.
